  • Oze Marsh (Ozegahara)
    Travel / Tourism
Katashina village of Tone-gun, Gunma prefecture
The entrances to the Hatomachi-toge Pass, Oshimizu and Fujimishita hiking trails are located around 90 minutes' drive from the Numata Interchange of the Kan-Etsu Expressway, via National Route 120 and National Route 401 to Tokura. Oze Marsh (Ozegahara) is the largest alpine wetland area on Honshu, extending two kilometers north to south and six kilometers east to west, at an altitude of 1,400 meters, within Oze National Park, which straddles Gunma Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture. Ozegahara, which is ringed by mountains (including Mt. Shibutsu, Mt. Hiuchigatake, and Mt. Keizuru), is a treasure-house of alpine wetland plants, including Asian Skunk Cabbage, Cottongrass, and Day Lily.
  • Yoshigadaira Wetlands

    Gunma Pref. Agatsumagunnakanojoumachi Iriyama
A beautiful, wetland area sprawling across the towns of Nakanojo and Kusatsu in northwest Gunma Prefecture. The area was registered in the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands list in 2015. The wetlands were significantly influenced by the volcanic activity of Mt. Shirane in their formation, and their lush verdure creates a striking visual contrast with the desolate mountain. The wetlands are also a special district of Joshin’etsukogen National Park, and visitors can enjoy hiking in amidst the area’s magical scenery. The wetlands are a habitat for native species such as Rhacophorus arboreus frogs and chatsubomi moss.
  • Kakumanbuchi

    Gunma Pref. Maebashishi Fujimimachiakagisan
This small marsh is located close to the peak of “Mt. Akagi.” At an elevation of 1360 meters and 800 meters in circumference, this area is a treasure trove of marsh and alpine plants. The Japanese azalea in summer and the leaves in fall are worth a look. There is a boardwalk around the Kakumanbuchi pool for a casual 30-minute stroll.

    Fukushima Minamiaizu-gun Hinoematamura
"This quiet marshland can be reached by hiking up the mountain either from the crossroads in the middle of Oe Marsh or from the trail in the back of Ozenuma Camping Site. You are very unlikely to see anyone else while you enjoy the wonderful view offered by this lovely place. The spacious ""private"" marshland is a place where you can refresh mind and body. Make sure to wear a bear-avoiding bell as there are no people in the area."

Gunma prefecture is synonymous with onsen. Natural hot spring water sources throughout the prefecture have given rise to a series of small onsen towns, each set among luscious mountains. At Kusatsu, Ikaho, and Minakami, traditional indoor and outdoor bathing experiences are served hand in hand with irresistible onsen-themed food, including steam-cooked eggs and custard pudding.
