Located in Asama Plateau, Tsumagoi Village, Gunma Prefecture, this elevated flower garden stretches out across the slopes of Mitsuone mountain. From mid-May to early June, approximately 150,000 rhododendron flowers bloom here. There is a free shuttle bus from Manza-Kazawaguchi Station. In addition to several types of rhododendron, a variety of plateau flora cover the vast area, such as Japanese azalea—a flower native to Gunma Prefecture and Iogoke, a type of lichen also known as Monroe's Lip. In autumn, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the larch forest shining in the sunlight, and in winter blanketed with beautiful pure white snow.

This wintersweet flower garden is located about 15-minutes from Matsuida-Myogi Interchange. There are 1,200 bushes and 12,000 wintersweet trees planted on the large site of 3.2 hectares. The beautiful blossoms and fragrance fill the air in season. The garden is open from late December to early February, and the best time to view the blossoms is on a fine day with snow still on the ground, the pastel yellow of the flowers looks brilliant. There is a shop in the park providing light refreshments, and locally grown vegetables and wintersweet seedlings. A wintersweet festival is held every year with entertainment and gifts of cut flowers which is popular with many tourists.

The park fee is indirectly 2000 yen for an adult (and parking). There is no parking at the trailhead so a 15-20 minute taxi (van) or bus is needed @ 1000 yen each way. This is definitely a full day...

    Gunma Kiryu-shi Niisatocho Nikkawa 1051

around-area-map

Gunma prefecture is synonymous with onsen. Natural hot spring water sources throughout the prefecture have given rise to a series of small onsen towns, each set among luscious mountains. At Kusatsu, Ikaho, and Minakami, traditional indoor and outdoor bathing experiences are served hand in hand with irresistible onsen-themed food, including steam-cooked eggs and custard pudding.
