- This retro café reminiscent of Showa period is located on the approach to Banna-ji Temple. Although it looks like an old civilian home, inside you’ll find chairs and tables, and a modern Japanese mood. Popular items include the crisply sweet “cream anmitsu” and “mame kanten” —agar covered in black honey and red peas. The “honkaku karakuchi Indian curry” is well received, featuring a good mix of spice and onion sweetness.

足利学校の横道にあります。なにやら動物にみせた石の置物がたくさん置いてあります。あんみつ食べました。甘すぎず、ちょうど良かったです。

- Located on a cobblestone street connecting Banna-ji Temple and Ashikaga School—a famous tourist spot of Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture—this shop specializes in antique clothing mainly from Taisho and early Showa periods. The interior has a lot of old fabrics, from casual kimonos to normal wear called “meisen.” The second floor features a workshop for remaking kimonos into western clothes and a café where you enjoy some green tea and high-quality, fresh confections. The kimonos are available for sale and one-day rentals.

- This cafe is located a 10-minute walk away from Ashikaga Station. After starting business in Tokyo’s Shimoochiai, the owner moved back to their hometown of Ashikaga and re-opened the café. It is named after Annu Kobori—daughter of the literary great, Mori Ogai. The interior walls are packed with novels, pictures, magazines, comics, and other books for you to enjoy at your leisure. Popular dishes include “brown sugar ginger tea” and freshly-baked “karikari madeleine.”

- This cafe and dog park is five minutes from the Mibu Interchange on the Kita-Kanto Expressway. The small, Canadian log cottage of the cafe is adjoined by a dog park area. From the cafe's open terrace seating area, customers can watch their dogs play as they enjoy loco moco, pancakes, and seasonal smoothies. The cafe is also replete with a rentable multipurpose room with a massage chair which can be used for birthdays, get-togethers, classes, and more. The cafe also accepts orders for handmade outfits for dogs.

暑い時に頂くアイスハーブティーは超おすすめです。 ふだんは、抹茶フラペチーノが好みなのですが、暑くて気分をすっきりとしたい時などに、アイスハーブティーをいただきます。 この日いただいたのは、ハイビスカス＆ローズヒップにオレンジピール＆レモングラスブレンドの、見た目にも鮮やかな赤色のノンカフェインのハーブティーです。 気分がリフレッシュされて、とてもさわやかな気分になりました。お勧めです。

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
