    Tochigi Pref. Nikkoushi Hangakimen 2396-1
A Japanese-style home building with a 33 thousand meter square garden located a five minute drive from Nikko Station. The home was built by Shinichi Kanaya, the second president of the Kanaya Hotel, in the 1920s for his ailing second daughter Yukiko to recuperate in. The home is located on a hill close to two Shrines and a Temple of Nikko World Heritage Site. The name “Matsuyashiki” means “Pine Mansion,” and is derived from the over 150 red pine trees growing in the garden; the garden also has a beautiful pond and “Gokakudo” pentagonal hall, as well as the Japanese-style home itself, moved from the grounds of the Kanaya Hotel. The facility was long kept private, but the garden itself was opened to the public in 2016. The seasonal beauty of the garden delights the eyes of visitors.

Tochigi Areas

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
