  • Iroha-zaka

    Iroha-zaka refers to a pair of sightseeing roads that connect central Nikko to the higher elevations of Lake Chuzenji and the mountainous Okunikko region. The First Iroha-zaka is used to come down while the Second Iroha-zaka is used to go up. Altogether there are 48 curves on the two roads, and each corner has been named with a letter of the ancient Japanese alphabet, which began with “I,” “Ro,” and “Ha.” There is a spectacular view from the Akechidaira observatory on the Second Iroha-zaka, and in the autumn it is such a popular spot to drive along and see the colorful leaves that traffic can become congested.
  • Kinu-Tateiwa Otsuribashi Suspension Bridge

    This is a 140-meter-long pedestrian suspension bridge which connects the Kinugawa hot spring resort to the Place of Scenic Beauty, “Tateiwa” (lit. Shield Rock). Below the bridge which has a height of about 40 meters, you can see the Kinugawa River, and you can enjoy the mountains which are dyed crimson and yellow during the season of autumn colors. Standing near to the suspension bridge, “Tateiwa” as its name suggests resembles the shape of a shield. It is also known as the “marriage bridge” as it connects the two, both the manly “Tateiwa” which rises up opposite the bridge and the feminine Kinugawa River which leisurely flows past.

    From this scenic observation deck in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, you can look out over Lake Chuzenji and Mt. Nantai. Known for its lovely scenery and beautiful autumn colors this is a popular spot to take a mid-drive stop for couples and families.

    This 1000-meter-high and 28 kilometer-long scenic route connects Kinugawa Onsen with Shiohara Onsen. It has many scenic spot with natural beauty to enjoy such as Taikooroshino Falls and Shirataki Falls. The views from the Fujimidai observatory are also excellent. The fall foliage is especially beautiful around mid-October to early November each year. The Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen hot springs districts are also located nearby.

It offers a great way to experience the magnificent natural setting of the Shiobara Valley. The nearby Shinrin-no-Eki Momijidani Suspension Bridge facility has a restaurant and a specialty shop.

    This suspension bridge spans the “Yahata Nature Study Path” in Yumoto, Nasu Town. The 38-meter-high, 130-meter-long bridge offers a sweeping view of the natural splendor of the Nasu Mountains. In addition to azalea season, the fall foliage and various blooms throughout the four seasons make for gorgeous scenery.
  • Nasu Highland Observatory (Lover's Sanctuary)

    This observatory is located at an altitude of 1,048 meters along Prefecture Route 17 in Yumoto, Nasu Town. During clear weather, you can enjoy an expansive view of the Nasu Mountains, Mt. Yamizo, and the Kanto Basin. It is also known for its spectacular night view. It is the 100th of the “Lover’s Sanctuary” sites.

In addition, there are facilities along the road such as the Akechidaira Observatory, from which visitors can get a view of the No. 1 Irohazaka and the area's seasonal scenery. A renowned destination for fall foliage, each year in autumn traffic jams along the road are common.
  • Roppouzawa Bridge

    This is a 320- meter -long bridge located roughly midway along Kirifuri Kogen Highway that spans Roppouzawa. It is an inverted rose type arch bridge located at a height of 1,434 meters. You can command a view of the Kuriyama Dam and Mt. Tsukuba from the bridge, and you can also enjoy the fresh greenery in spring and the autumnal colors in autumn. There is a car park maintained before and after the bridge so it is convenient to walk there from the carpark.

    This historic district is located along the Uzuma River in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture. It features preserved townscape lined with warehouses and other old buildings from when it was a bustling wholesale district from the late Edo period to the early Showa period. Today it is a popular tourist destination that allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Edo period. It is also used as a filming location for TV and film productions. There is even a pleasure boat that operates on the Uzuma River.
  • Kurenai no Tsuribashi suspension bridge

    A 25 minute drive from the Nishinasuno-shiobara Interchange. A red suspension bridge crossing the Hoki River behind the Shiobara Imagination Archives. The bridge is 52.5 meters long. The Hoki River in the Shiobara Hot Springs Village district is dotted with hot springs with differing water qualities, and this area is known as the “11 springs of Shiobara.” The Kurenai no Tsuribashi suspension bridge is in the center of this area and the vicinity is famous as one of the top destinations in Shiobara for enjoying autumn foliage. The Japanese maples and other trees seen from the bridge are quite beautiful; there’s also a 900 meter long walking trail across the bridge which visitors can follow and take in their fill of fall colors and mountain stream scenery.

    A Japanese-style home building with a 33 thousand meter square garden located a five minute drive from Nikko Station. The home was built by Shinichi Kanaya, the second president of the Kanaya Hotel, in the 1920s for his ailing second daughter Yukiko to recuperate in. The home is located on a hill close to two Shrines and a Temple of Nikko World Heritage Site. The name “Matsuyashiki” means “Pine Mansion,” and is derived from the over 150 red pine trees growing in the garden; the garden also has a beautiful pond and “Gokakudo” pentagonal hall, as well as the Japanese-style home itself, moved from the grounds of the Kanaya Hotel. The facility was long kept private, but the garden itself was opened to the public in 2016. The seasonal beauty of the garden delights the eyes of visitors.
  • Mikaeri no Tsuribashi suspension bridge

    A 15 minute drive from the Nishinasuno-shiobara Interchange. A suspension bridge 100 meters long and 30 meters above the ground which also serves as the starting point of a walking path in the ravine area. The bridge can be reached in about five minutes by walking along the trail from the Gamaishi Park parking lot marked by a stone monument to the author Ozaki Koyo. The bridge’s name, meaning “to look back,” is derived from its beauty, which practically demands the visitors look back at it on their way home. There’s a viewing platform on the other side of the bridge from which you can see Mikaeri Falls, a large waterfall in the Shiobara Hot Springs Village area; this view is particularly spectacular in the autumn when the trees have turned red and gold.
  • Yanagida-ohashi Bridge

    Bridging the downtown and Yanagita area in Utsunomiya City Tochigi Prefecture, this bridge, completed in 1970, spans across the Kinugawa River. The Prefectural Route 64, Utsunomiya-Mukada line runs across the bridge. The bridge is expanded, depending on the volume of traffic. The bridge underwent reconstructive work to add two lanes to the existing span, making it a four-lane bridge. Equipped with pedestrian ways, one can walk across the bridge on foot as well.

    This was the first post station town on the Oshu Kaido highway, one of the Five Routes maintained by the central government during the Edo period. The Shirasawa region sprawling on the north side of what is now Utsunomiya City prospered as a post station town on the Oshu Kaido from the Edo through the Meiji periods; today, many structures as well as cultural practices from this time period can still be found here. Shinto shrines in Shirasawa, once visited by daimyo lord processions and great numbers of travelers, are dedicated to the Seven Gods of Fortune, and visitors exploring the area on foot can enjoy a sort of mini Seven Gods of Fortune pilgrimage by making their way to each of the shrines. The grounds of Shirahige Shrine, dedicated to Daikokuten (Mahakala), offer a sweeping view of the Shirasawa area.

    A viewpoint at the top of the Daini Iroha-zaka Slope. You can reach the Akechidaira Observation Deck in about three minutes from the ropeway boarding point at the foot of the slope; there is a large parking lot there as well as a drive-in. The top has one of Nikko's best views, taking in Mt. Nantai, Lake Chuzenji, and the plunging Kegon Falls. It's said Akechidaira was given its name by Akechi Mitsuhide who fled to Mt. Hiei after the Battle of Yamazaki; he wanted to leave his mark on the spot in Nikko with the best view.

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys.
