- This venerable kanmidokoro (a cafe featuring Japanese-style sweets) founded in 1723 is located on the approach to Nikko Toshogu Shrine. It is famous for offering the local specialty Miyamae dango dumplings. These additive-free dumplings feature a special miso sauce. Their matcha tea sets are also popular. The shop, which has a nostalgic atmosphere and an in-eat space, is visited by many tourists sightseeing at Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

- Shogetsu Himuro is a natural ice producer which was founded in 1894 in Imaichi, Nikko City. Today they produce and sell natural ice which is hard to come by in Japan nowadays. As you might expect they also sell kakigori (shaved ice dessert) using the natural ice. Many people can be found queuing up for their exceptionally good and fluffy textured kakigori.

- This retro café reminiscent of Showa period is located on the approach to Banna-ji Temple. Although it looks like an old civilian home, inside you’ll find chairs and tables, and a modern Japanese mood. Popular items include the crisply sweet “cream anmitsu” and “mame kanten” —agar covered in black honey and red peas. The “honkaku karakuchi Indian curry” is well received, featuring a good mix of spice and onion sweetness.

- Located at the end of a narrow alley on Flea Market Street, about a 5-minute walk from Tochigi City Hall, this teahouse faces the promenade along Tomoehagawa River and serves special anmitsu (sweet bean paste), ojiruko (sweet bean soup), handmade cakes, shaved ice, etc. The warm and cozy interior is a homey space with a nostalgic feel. The kiwi parfait with plenty of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream topped with kiwi sauce is a popular menu item that is not too sweet, making it the perfect stopover during a stroll through Tochigi City, a town of warehouses.

Tochigi Areas
Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys.
