During the Battle of the Kodokan, an internal struggle which occurred in 1868, the majority of the building was destroyed in a fire, but portions of the original facility, including the front gate, Shizendo hall, and reception hall, as well as stone monuments, still stand today. In 2015, the location was designated a Japan Heritage Site by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as part of the Educational Heritage from Early-Modern Japan group of structures.
