This aquarium is located along the coast of Oarai Town, Higashiibaraki County, Ibaraki Prefecture, and is among the largest in the country. Sea mammals and oceanic/freshwater fish from around the world and Oarai Sea are kept here. Exhibits are divided into nine zones, like “The Encounter Sea” and “Seas of the World.” You can watch a variety of living creatures, like popular penguins and sunfish, or see the impressive shark tank. The dolphin and sea lion shows are particularly lively and popular.

We spend 4hours here, after landing from Narita airport straight away drive through Oarai and managed to see the Dolphins shows at 12pm,nice late lunch after hanging around the aquarium with...

An aquarium facing the north side of Lake Kasumigaura, the second largest lake in Japan. The aquarium displays freshwater fish from Kasumigaura, over 1,000 saltwater fish spanning 130 species from around the world, and reptiles. The aquarium's diverse facilities include a panoramic tank where visitors can watch char and Japanese huchen swimming, and round tanks which make it possible to view the occupants from 360 degrees. The aquarium is designed to teach visitors who walk through it about the ecosystem of Kasumigaura. The aquarium also holds events like giving visitors the chance to feed tortoises. The aquarium is perfect for families with children as well.

    Ibaraki Hitachiomiya-shi Yamagata 535
"An aquarium in Yamagata, Hitachiomiya City. Located beside Seiryu Park on the Kuji River, this is the smallest aquarium in Japan. It breeds more than 50 aquatic species of aquatic organisms, with a focus on freshwater fish from the Kuji River and its environs. In addition, they have Japanese giant salamanders on view. These have been designated a National Special Natural Monument. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, they offer rides on a ""mini-Shinkansen.”"

    小さい水族館ですが、オオサンショウウオやイトウなど貴重な生物も居ますが、やや汚れている水槽があったのがマイナスポイントかな。 近くには遊具のある公園や見にSLに乗れる広場があるので、子供連れにはいいかも。

Just a stone’s throw from Tokyo, Ibaraki is a coastal prefecture that has mastered juxtapositions, where old shrines meet new scientific discoveries and traditional gardens are frequented by the inventors of some of the newest technology. Head to Mito City's Kairakuen - one of Japan's Three Great Gardens - in spring to experience the cellestial blooming of fantastic cherry blossoms at the annual sakura festival.
