This is a ski resort located in Zao Onsen Yamagata City Yamagata Prefecture boasting the largest land area in Tohoku. The courses have a wide variety of length and inclines and it is also enjoyed by school excursion parties as well as families and couples. The upper ice-field course offers a wide view of the signature frost-covered trees. Seeing the magical frost-covered trees illuminated at night is a must. The Zao Onsen town spreads out from the mountain’s foot.

Such a great ski resort and all is great. You can spend 4 days for skiing and enjoy the speed and scenery passing by you when skiing. After the daily ski, in the evening you can enjoy the hot spring...

Yamagata Prefectural General Sports Park is located in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture; it was opened in 1992 as a place for local people to participate in sporting and leisure activities, and as the venue for the 47th National Sports Festival of Japan (the “Benibana National Sports Festival”). This large Park includes an athletics stadium, a multi-purpose sports stadium, tennis courts, a baseball stadium, a soccer stadium, etc. There is also a children’s “Play Forest” with a long roller slide and lots of other play equipment, and the “Ikoi Plaza” where visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll. The Park is used by people of all ages. The open-air swimming pool (which is only open in the summer months) has a “lazy river,” water slides, a special pool for young children, etc., and is very popular with children and families.

  • Gassan Ski Resort

    Yamagata Pref. Nishimurayamagunnishikawamachi Shidu Wisteria
This is a ski resort exclusively for summer skiing at Mt. Ubagatake (the second peak of Mt. Gassan) in Yamagata Prefecture approximately 25 minutes by car from Gassan Interchange on the Yamagata Expressway. As it is a ski resort in a heavy snow area it opens in April when other ski resorts close and skiing is possible until summer and the snow disappears. There are four slopes and the natural bumps utilizing the natural terrain are perfect for practicing mogul skiing. The biggest attraction is that it is warm and visitors can enjoy skiing in light clothing and even short sleeves. Skiing under the blue sky looking over the fresh green spreading below is refreshing.

This ski park is located on Mt. Mizunashi in Kannonji, Higashine City. Known for its consistent quality and snow condition, these five slopes and four parks are covered with 100% natural power snow. This well designed park has a dedicated escalator connecting the parking lot directly to the Jangle Plaza where the information counter, changing rooms, shops, and a restaurant serving pizza from its specialized pizza oven are all in one spot.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
