Eboshiyama Senbonzakura

Yamagata Pref. Nanyoushi Akayu 1415 In the Wolpskan Park

This popular cherry blossom viewing spot is in Eboshiyama Park in Akayu, Nanyo City. It has been given the name Eboshiyama Senbonzakura for its 1,000-plus trees that come into bloom including 100-year-plus weeping cherry trees, Yoshino cherry trees, and rare Edo-higanzakura cherry trees. With its view of Akayu Onsen and the shopping districts, it has been selected as one of the top 100 cherry blossom spots in Japan, making it a popular tourist area.
Kubo Cherry Tree of Isazawa

This ancient tree is in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture. This edo-higanzakura cherry tree is approximately 1,200 years old, and 13.85 meters high. It's not only famous in the Tohoku area as the Sakura Titan, it's also a registered National Natural Monument. Every April, when the tree is in bloom, they hold a Sakura Matsuri here, and the evening illumination allows visitors to appreciate the beautiful sight even at night.

This municipal park in Yokocho, Nagai City has over 100 years of history. It features one of the largest collections of irises in Japan with one million flowers and 500 cultivars. Visitors can appreciate valuable varieties such as Nagai Koshu, said to be very close to the original Japanese iris species. The park has free entry except for during its Iris Festival held between mid- June and early July.

Yamagata Nishiokitama-gun Shiratakamachi Ayukai Sakura 3347

This cherry blossom viewing spot is in Sakuradate, Ayukai, Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County. Located in one corner of the Ayukai Castle ruins, it holds an Edo-higanzakura cherry tree that is said to be over 1,000 years old. Its name, Komori-do, means “nursemaid temple,” and comes from a story about how a nursemaid was deified as a child-guardian Bodhisattva after raising the castle lord's sickly child into healthy adulthood. It is now a prefectural Natural Monument.

Yamagata Nishiokitama-gun Shiratakamachi Takadama 3663

This cherry tree is in Takadama, Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County. It's an Edo-higanzakura cherry planted on the grounds of the Yakushi-do temple, and is about 10 meters high. Stories tell that it was planted by Shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro when he came to this land as part of his conquest of the north. This would mean the tree is some 1,200 years old. It is a prefectural Natural Monument.
Juni no Sakura

This cherry tree is in Yamaguchi, Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County. It receives its name from its place next to the Juni Yakushi-do (twelfth Yakushi temple). It is about 400 years old, and as the third generation of great tree here, and when it is in bloom there are shops selling local specialty Yonaka no Kaimochi sweets. In addition, there are several other trees in the same town that are over 500 years old.
Donoiri-zakura Cherry

Yamagata Nishiokitama-gun Shiratakamachi Asadachi Haguro Iri 4396

This cherry tree is in Asadachi Haguroiri, Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County. A 680 year-old Edo-higanzakura cherry and prefectural Natural Monument, it got its name from a story about the 11th lord of the Yonezawa domain, Uesugi Narisada stopping here. There are several other trees in the same town that are over 500 years old, and in spring they hold the Shirataka Kotenzakura no Sato Cherry Festival.
Akasaka no Yakushi-zakura Cherry

This cherry tree is in Akasaka, Minowada, Shirataka Town, Nishiokitama County. A 970 year old Edo-higanzakura cherry tree, it's also a prefectural Natural Monument. There are several other trees in the same town that are over 500 years old, and in spring they hold the Shirataka Kotenzakura no Sato Cherry Festival.
Mogamigawa Riverbank Senbon-zakura

Yamagata Nagai-shi Sakura Ohashi-Nagai Hashi Hazama

This cherry blossom spot is in Nagai City. Both banks of the Mogami River flowing through the city are planted with hundreds of cherry trees for about two kilometers, from Sakura Ohashi bridge to Nagai bridge. The project began to commemorate a visit from the Taisho Emperor in 1915 with cherry tree planting, and the line of trees over 100 years old is a sight to behold.

This historic landmark is in Nezugaseki, Tsuruoka City. Along with Nakosonoseki and Shirakawanoseki, it is one of three historic Ou Gates. Stories say that this is the original location of the story behind Kanjincho, a kabuki drama based on the exploits of Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Yamagata Nanyo-shi Akayu Onsen Nagai-shi Nishiokitama-gun Shiratakamachi

This is a cherry blossom viewing route along the Yamagata Railway Flower Nagai Line, which runs through the Okitama valley in southern Yamagata Prefecture. Along this route, selected as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots, are about 20 famous cherry blossom sites. Here, one can enjoy over 1200 year-old cherries that have been protected, chief of which is the 1000 cherries on Eboshi mountain, and the Isazawano-kubozakura cherry, and the Kusaokano-Daimyojin cherry, which are National Natural Monuments. It is said that Date Masamune hid in the cavity of the Kusaokano-Daimyojin cherry tree after being defeated during his first campaign.

Yamagata Areas
