Yamagata Pref. Tsuruokashi Haguromachikawadai Higashimasukawayama 102
This is a photo spot and tourist facility in Haguro Town, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, open to the public mainly as a set for shooting period piece films. It is famous as the location for well-known films including “Departures,” “Zatoichi THE LAST” and “Time Scoop Hunter.” Shooting sets are dotted around the vast 88-hectare (880,000m²) area, and aside from urban areas one can also see various locations including mountain settlements, fishing villages and inn towns. Excursion buses operating in the area cost 500 yen for the day.

  • Shonai-machi Windmill Village
    Travel / Tourism
Yamagata Higashitagawa-gun Shonaimachi Karikawa Kasayama 444-9
Shonai-machi Windmill Village is a wind-powered generating facility located on Mt. Kasayama, which looms over Shonai Town, Yamagata Prefecture. Since the old days, people in the Shonai region have been plagued by crop damage due to the powerful winds, known as “Kiyokawa-dashi,” that blow down from the Mogami pass. However, that problem has been turned into a benefit with the installation of windmills, which have become a beloved symbol of the town. Windome Tachikawa, a museum within the cluster of windmills, contains exhibits describing the workings of windmills and facts about wind. Other features suitable for family enjoyment include an open space with playground equipment, battery-operated vehicles, a field of lavender, and an observation platform that afford a view of the entire Shonai Plain.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
