Koshikakean is a Japanese-style confectionery store run from a more than 100 year old building in Tendo City. The shop sells Japanese confectionery like their jouman, or sake bun. The bun itself is made with ginjoushu sake and sake lees and is stuffed with fine-grained sweet bean paste. Other sweets include their light and fluffy warabi mochi. Koshikakean was also famous for its kakigori, or shaved ice, which was so popular there were always too many customers in the shop which forced it to stop selling the ice cones. They have however begun to sell kakigori again at a sister store, available only in the summer time, and it is still as popular with customers now as it ever was.

A 30-minute walk from Hagurosan Zuishinmon Gate, this popular tea house is located on Ninosaka hill on the approach to Mt. Haguro. Ninosaka is the longest and steepest of all the approach paths to Mt. Haguro. On the left side going up is “Ninosaka Chaya.” Pestle-ground daily, the recommended “chikara mochi” is strong mochi with soy flour and red bean paste, coupled with matcha tea. The pestle–ground strong texture is popular with temple visitors. Also, you can see all of Shonai plains from the tea house, and on a clear day, you get the gorgeous sight of the Sea of Japan all the way out to Tobishima.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
