Oyasukyo is a famous spot in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. Located in a valley at 60 meter elevation, this hot spring is set apart by the boiling water and steam bubbling forth from bare rock. With its well-maintained trails, you can get a close look at the layers of bedrock holding back intense natural heat, with cracks letting out clouds of steam and hot water. It's also famous for its fall leaf viewing, and its popular sightseeing spot equipped with parking areas.

    Akita Yuzawa-shi
A valley at the entrance of Kawarage Jigoku. As you gaze over the valley from the Sanzugawa Bridge suspended nearly 40-meters above the mountain river and look at the precipitous cliffs on either side you'll come to understand the naming of the bridge and the valley (Sanzu River is the Buddhist equivalent of the River Styx that souls must cross into the afterlife). On either side of the bridge stand four stone statues, Lord Enma and Lord Taizan on one side, and Longevity Jizo and Praying Jizo on the other. The autumn changing colors of the foliage is superb.

This is a roughly eight kilometer long valley in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. It offers views of various waterfalls, including Fudo-no-taki and Yakushi-no-taki. It's also famous for its fall leaf viewing, and its well-maintained trails make it a popular sightseeing spot. You can find Oyasukyo Onsen upstream, as well.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
