Located in Takasago Chuo Park one kilometer from Sendai Port, Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium has 100 aquarium exhibits. The aquarium’s centerpiece is a giant aquarium recreating the sea of Sanriku, and the aquarium raises some 25 thousand creatures spanning 50 species. The Umino-Mori Stadium on the second floor is one of the largest such facilities in Tohoku and seats around 1,000 people. One of the unique features about this stadium is its lack of an acrylic divider between the audience and the performers. During a show, visitors can view vibrant dolphin and sea lion performances up close.

Some of the tanks, I feel like, may be a nit too small. The sea turtle aquarium was cramped I didn’t take a photo because I felt bad for them. The rest of the tanks were nice! I got to see a lot of...

This temple is about a ten-minute drive from Kunimi Station on the JR Senzan Line. It's also known popularly as Sendai Daikannon after the 100-meter-high statue with this name. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Sendai municipal system and to wish for prosperity in the 21st century, its foundation reaches 21 meters underground. Daikokudo with its red torii gates is also on the grounds. It honors Aburakake Daikokuten and is known as a matchmaking spot. "A 15-minute drive from the Sendai-minami interchange and a 20-minute drive from the Sendai-Miyagi interchange. This art museum is also located right next to the ""Matsuba"" bus stop. As its name states, this museum displays kaleidoscopes and also holds kaleidoscope making classes. The museum displays a wide array of kaleidoscopes, from huge kaleidoscopes to antique examples to kaleidoscopes made by modern artists. Some of the museum's kaleidoscopes can also be used to take pictures. The museum's short kaleidoscope making classes are fun, easy, and take just 10 to 30 minutes. The museum shop sells inexpensively priced kaleidoscopes to true kaleidoscope masterpieces."

This is worth the trip from Sendai! We were impressed with the creativity and diversity of kaleidoscopes. Really an international collection! Great for adults with it without children!

Akiu Shrine is located right at the center of Akiu Sato in Sendai City. It's said that the deity of Kumano-jinja Shrine was first brought here over 1,200 years ago when the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro subjugated the Emishi in the year 808. In the Muromachi period, the shrine came to be associated with a war god, and today it's honored by a flow of visitors from around the country for help winning contests and games. An unusual persimmon tree on the grounds is also enshrined as a god of matchmaking. Other sacred trees include a gingko dedicated to childrearing, a lucky cherry tree, and a luster-leaf holly tree with matchmaking powers.

Akiu Craft Park consists of nine craft “households” that live in the village while continuously applying themselves to their craft and producing authentic wares. Those with reservations can experience koma (top for spinning play) decoration, kokeshi wooden doll decoration, chopstick lacquering, handkerchief indigo dyeing, and jigsaw woodworking. There are also seasonal events that visitors can enjoy while walking through the site. It’s about 15 minutes by car from the Sendai Minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

This is a lovely place to do crafts or to purchase crafts. The one downside is that it is hard to get here by public transit. Worth a stop if you are coming to the area!
