Zuiganji Temple is a temple founded by the priest Jikaku Daishi in 828 that belongs to the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism headed by Myoushin-ji Temple. After the temple fell into decline during the mayhem of the warring states, the feudal lord Date Masamune began restoration work in 1604 and four full years later the hondo (main temple building) was renovated to conform to Momoyama-style architecture. At that time it was officially renamed as Matsushima-Seiryuzan-Zuigan-Enpuku-Zenji. Sights to see include the Kuri, the Zen kitchen where meals were prepared in the past. This so-called kitchen has been designated as a National Treasure for its beauty.

Approximately 40 minutes from the Kawakita Interchange off the Sanriku Expressway, this shrine is known as the shrine of wisdom and academic knowledge in which the Amenokoyane god is enshrined. The shrine gets its name from its object of worship, which is an immense rock that appears as though it is hanging from ropes in midair. It gained popularity as the god of academic entrance examinations, because it may seem as though you will fail but you won’t, when the cords of the rock did not fail but the rock did not fall and survived the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and many other disasters. Every year from mid-December the new year’s decorations of a large hoop, an Ashi-no-Wa, and gate post decorations made from special reeds are placed at the entrance as a welcome to many worshipers.

This memorial hall honors the achievements of Mr. Shotaro Ishinomori, a manga artist from Ishinomori Town, Tome County. His characters await visitors at the entrance and reception area, and in addition to his many works in the permanent exhibition area, there are figurines and a reproduction of his room in Tokiwaso where he lived in his younger days. They hold special exhibitions of manga and anime from various genres three or four times a year. The house where he spent his boyhood is just beside the museum, so you can visit them both together.

"The museum is located about five minutes by car from JR Watanoha Station. Visitors can learn about the achievements of the Keicho Diplomatic Mission to Europe and the culture of sailing ships during the Age of Discovery by viewing a large screen showing the interior of the restored ship, the San Juan Bautista, a galleon that sailed the Pacific Ocean and back in the 1600s, and an aerial view of the ship. The adjacent ""Ishinomaki City San Juan Bautista Park"" was built in the image of the Italian square seen by HasekuraTsunenaga and others of the Keicho Diplomatic Mission, and outdoor events are also held there. Akiu Shrine is located right at the center of Akiu Sato in Sendai City. It's said that the deity of Kumano-jinja Shrine was first brought here over 1,200 years ago when the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro subjugated the Emishi in the year 808. In the Muromachi period, the shrine came to be associated with a war god, and today it's honored by a flow of visitors from around the country for help winning contests and games. An unusual persimmon tree on the grounds is also enshrined as a god of matchmaking. Other sacred trees include a gingko dedicated to childrearing, a lucky cherry tree, and a luster-leaf holly tree with matchmaking powers.

A merchant house located in the center of town. Construction lasted from the mid-Meiji period to the Taisho period. The storehouse, main building, and treasury all give the appearance of the style of the wealthy Edo-Tokyo style merchant class and throughout the country there aren't many manors like this that are still so well preserved. The building is highly regarded as a very valuable cultural heritage. As you pass through the main gate, you'll find a garden of carefully maintained seasonal trees and vegetation and will feel as if you've traveled back in time to the good old days of the Meiji or Taisho periods. The property is currently a rental space and is used for a variety of genres of events including Rakugo comic storytelling, plays, small live music events, and photo exhibitions.

This back alley shopping district is located in Ichibancho 2-Chome, Aoba Ward, Sendai City. It originated from the many street vendors that gathered here during the recovery from the bombing of Sendai in 1945. Even today, it retains its retro Showa period vibe. The alley is lined with izakaya (Japanese-style pubs) and other restaurants as well as clothing stores, sundries shops, and other vendors.

Mitakido is a road station half way along the Sanriku Expressway that opened in 2017. In their sales corner they have an assortment of fresh and safe seasonal ingredients harvested locally, and their zunda soft serve ice cream comes recommended when you want to take a breather. The food court offers an array of choices like a set meal with Sendai steak. There is also a dog run and an event plaza.

A historic building located in Shiogama City a 10 minute walk from Hon-Shiogama Station on the JR Senseki Line built in 1924 by Fumihira Kamei, the first president of the Kamei Corporation. Of high historic value, the building combines old fashioned Japanese architecture with Western architectural styles, incorporating art nouveau and session styles in the exterior design in a way that is difficult to replicate with modern plastering techniques. The retro Taisho period structure is open to the general public and is also used as the main venue for events such as the Hina Meguri doll festival and the Shiogama-sama Kamigami no Hana Akari lantern festival.

A 20 minute drive from Tagajo Station on the JR Senseki Line. Influenced by a history of international exchange, this multipurpose complex was built as a space for cultural creation and makes use of natural terrain commanding a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean. Facilities include the International Village Hall, the only performing arts stage in Japan with a view of the ocean in the background; and the Amphitheater, a 10 meter in diameter round outdoor theater positioned amongst pools of water. There are many ways for visitors to enjoy themselves here, such as a restaurant where you can take in a meal and a theater show; and Plymouth House, the only museum in Japan dedicated to the history of pioneering in the US.

Akiu Craft Park consists of nine craft “households” that live in the village while continuously applying themselves to their craft and producing authentic wares. Those with reservations can experience koma (top for spinning play) decoration, kokeshi wooden doll decoration, chopstick lacquering, handkerchief indigo dyeing, and jigsaw woodworking. There are also seasonal events that visitors can enjoy while walking through the site. It’s about 15 minutes by car from the Sendai Minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway.

This is a lovely place to do crafts or to purchase crafts. The one downside is that it is hard to get here by public transit. Worth a stop if you are coming to the area!

A museum which conducts a variety of special exhibitions throughout the year. The structure, an old fashioned Japanese estate and kura warehouse, once belonged to Saito Risuke, a wealthy merchant which traded in a wide array of goods from the late Edo period to the early Showa period. The residence and personal effects of Saito were donated to the town, and the town government turned the facility into a museum open to the general public. In 2010, the facility was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property. The museum displays period artwork and also holds exhibits in line with key events such as the Sairi no Hina Matsuri doll festival, the Boy's Day celebration, and the New Year's Day of Sairi. In addition, the museum periodically holds workshops on making silk washi paper and other crafts.
