What is Miyagi?

Lying along the northeastern coast of Japan, Miyagi prefecture is home to lashings of natural parks, oysters, and hot springs. While the bustling city of Sendai offers some simple city entertainment, it’s the Matsushima islands that deserve the most attention, having boosted the prefecture’s reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic views.

Getting Around

While we would recommend making a beeline for Miyagi's more rural areas, a trip to Sendai is almost unavoidable, with Sendai Station the gateway to the prefecture. A 1.5-hour bullet train journey north to Sendai will set you back around 10,000 yen - or nothing if you're on the JR Pass - while local trains will bring you into the prefecture for around half the price but several times the journey length.
