The flat-roofed Japanese building is designated a preserved building in Morioka City and was used in the filming of NHK’s serial TV drama “Dondo hare.” Built from late Edo Period to Meiji Period, the building was a merchant house dealing in straw products and wicks for lanterns.

A seven-minute walk from the Tenmangu-mae bus station, accessible by bus from Morioka Station. At this shrine located on top of a small hill in Morioka City, the god of learning—Sugawara no Michizane is worshipped. Quietly dignified amid the rich greenery, the shrine sits peacefully on a hill overlooking the town. This is a place where Takuboku Ishikawa, a famous poet used to come to read or stroll in his days as a student. The humorous komainu statues perched above a stone inscribed with lyrics written by Takuboku are a sight worth seeing. Takuboku lovingly called them “Ishiuma”, and they are said to have appeared in his novel called “Souretsu.”

This is a popular restaurant for Morioka jaja-men. The shop is said to have originated when the founder had eaten zhajiangmian in Manchuria before WWII, and tried to replicate the dish with Japanese ingredients. Enjoy the chewy, broad noodles garnished with meat stir-fried in miso, cucumber and green onion, and mix in garlic, ginger and chili oil. Finish off the meal as Zhidan soup by leaving behind one mouthful of noodles, then adding in noodle broth and a beaten egg.
