Shared tourist taxis run from Tanohata Station. Trekking is available with local guides along the Michinoku Shiokaze Trail, including Kitayamazaki. They know the Tanohata area well, and the treks can be adapted to your fitness level and time available, as well as to your preferred course or theme. You can take in highlights such as earthquake remnants, the Unosu Cliff Nature Trail, and the Kitayamazaki Nature Trail, which has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Walks. You'll enjoy hiking in the great outdoors while experiencing the story and background of the area.

About three hours from Morioka by bus or train. These banya, or fishermen's huts, symbolize the connection between the Rikuchu Coast's natural environment and the lives of its people. Tanohata Banya Ecotourism is the idea behind their nature experience programs. There are lots of hands-on activities that let you get in touch with nature, including riding in a small fishing boat known as a sappa, making your own shell art, etc. A guide will accompany you trekking on the Kitayamazaki Nature Trail, which has been selected as one of Japan's 100 best walks. The guide speaks in a friendly Tohoku dialect.
