  • Kitakami Tenshochi Park

    Located at the point where the Kitakawa River and Waga River meet, the Kitakami Tenshochi Park is a municipal park which is referred to as one of the three famous cherry blossom spots in Michinoku (Tohoku). The name “Tenshochi”, meaning beauty spot, comes from the wonderful view of the cherry blossom seen from Jingaoka Hill. 10,000 cherry blossom trees and 100,000 azaleas are planted at the approximately 30,000 square meter site, and in 1990 the park was selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. The Sakura Matsuri Festival (cherry blossom festival) is held each year from the middle of April to the beginning of May, with lots of tourists coming to visit at this time.

    A natural forest park located a 15-minute drive from the Karumai Interchange on the Hachinohe Expressway. The park was designed to make use of the beautiful scenery created by the surrounding forest and dam. The grounds have been planted with some 150 thousand tulips which come into beautiful bloom from late April through mid-May. In addition to colorful tulips in spring, visitors can take in seasonal scenery throughout the year such as hydrangeas in summer and fall foliage in autumn. The park is adjoined by a campground and tennis courts and offers a class in which you can try making charcoal.

    雪谷川ダムでつくられたダム湖を囲む広大な自然森林公園で、高さ16メートル、羽根の直径が20メートもある風車がシンボルになっています。また、ダム湖に架かる全長154メートルの赤い吊り橋からは、緑豊かな自然景観を眺めることができます。6月末に訪れたのでアジサイが奇麗に咲いていました。

    This park is located around a 25-minute drive from the Wakayanagi-Kannari Interchange off of the Tohoku Highway via the National Route 183 and National Route 342. The park blooms with flowers all year round, but the peony garden with over 320 cultivars and 4000 peony plants is a main attraction and also the beautiful begonia conservatory, Reina de Flores. Often called the king of one hundred flowers, the peony, is at its peak from around early May, but in late April the park hosts the Peony Festival, which encompasses the Chinese peony season as well. Local produce is sold at the exchange plaza, and the restaurant offers a set combination tray with five mochi flavors that differ every day throughout the year.

  • Hanamaki Regional Park

    A large comprehensive park situated a 15-minute drive from the west entrance of Hanamaki Station in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. The park has an exercise field, golf course, tennis courts, and other sports facilities, as well as a children's field with playground, a pond where you can fish for Japanese crucian carp, and a rest house. Wildflowers such as azaleas, Japanese wood poppies, Anemone raddeana, and other wildflowers grow throughout the park. Rabbits, foxes, grey starlings, kingfishers, and other animals can be observed living in the park's conservation forest.
  • Tsuriyama Park

    This park was built on the site of Ichinoseki Castle. The hilltop castle was originally constructed to take advantage of the topography of the small hill that was called Tsuriyama. The castle was demolished in the Meiji period and the area became the park it is today. Inside the park, visitors can see Japanese gardens, and the castle ruins, including remains of the moat and a well. The park is slightly elevated in comparison to its surroundings and visitors can enjoy a view that overlooks the town of Ichinoseki from the hilltop. It is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot, and many people come to see the blossoms during the season.
  • Nabekura Park

    Iwate Tono-shi Tonocho
    A park on the site of a castle built in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Made by the Asonuma clan, it later became the residence of the Tono-Nanbu clan until it was abandoned in the Meiji period. More than 1,000 hill cherry trees and Yoshino cherry trees are planted across the site, and it is famous throughout Japan as a cherry blossom viewing spot. The Tono Cherry Blossom Festival is held when the trees are in bloom. There is an observatory modeled on a castle on the site of the former outer castle area with a view of Tono town.
  • Atagoyama Natural Park

    A nature park built to commemorate the 1993 marriage of Crown prince Naruhito. Located in the Ishiwada district with the winding Idegawa River, sites include the sheer cliffs along the river as well as silicified wood. There are also lots of seasonal flowers such as wisteria and lilies, as well as colored foliage in the fall. An observatory has a view overlooking the city, and lots of visitors come for the hiking course too. Its many other highlights include historic features such as Atago Shrine at the top of the park and the site of Numajiri Castle, as well as a monument to poets with ties to Morioka City such as Tachihara Michizo and Takeshima Shigetaro.
  • Iwate Sculpture Park

    Located an approximately 30-minute drive from the Tohoku Expressway’s Takizawa Interchange, this park is lined with sculptures made from special local black granite. Various works such as abstract and cute pieces produced at the Iwate International Stone Carving Symposium held from 1973 to 2003 are on display. It is an artsy space where you can feel the rich color of black granite and the energy generated by the sculptures that look different depending on when they are seen.
  • Shiroyama Park

    Located about a 15-minute drive from the Tohoku Expressway’s Shiwa Interchange, this park was built on the site of Kosuiji Castle on a small mountain near the center of town. Kosuiji Castle once flourished as the residence of the Shiba family in the Ashikaga clan, and it prospered for about 400 years as the center of medieval Shiwa County. The Kitakami River flows below you, and the park overlooks Mt. Iwate and Mt. Azumane in the distance, and about 2,000 cherry trees such as Edo-higanzakura cherry, Yoshino cherry and double-flowered cherry are planted in the park. The path leading to the park becomes a wonderful tunnel of cherry blossoms when they are in bloom.
  • Iwate Prefectural Takizawa Forest Park Birdwatching Nature Center

    This forest is located in Sunakomi, Takizawa City. It is a natural forest of broad-leaved trees such as Japanese red pine that spreads over a hill with an altitude of about 250 meters, and has many mammals, insects and birds such as the narcissus flycatcher and great tit that inhabit it. In addition to renting out equipment that can be used for nature observations and holding nature-related exhibitions in the adjoining Nature Center, it also conducts nature observation events on the third Sunday of every month.

    Gindoro Park is in the city of Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, built on the sight of the former Hanamaki School of Agriculture, where Miyazawa Kenji was employed as a teacher. Miyazawa Kenji was especially fond of gindoro (silver poplar) trees, and the park contains stone statues of characters from his stories such as Matasaburo of the Wind and plaques where his poems Early Spring are inscribed.

    久しぶりに走りたくて行きました。近くのセンターで、お金を払って利用できます。お年を召したおじいちゃん達も結構います。秋の紅葉を感じながらランニングしてきました。

    ここの椎茸は、とても美味しいのですが、10月あたりから冬季休業に入るまでは、きのこそばが食べられる。 更に11月辺りからは新そばになるので、この限られた期間は外せない。 このシーズン以外のおすすめのメニューは、おろし椎茸そば。 サイドメニューのそば餅は、串に二個付いてお得な感じ。甘味噌が塗ってあって美味しい。
