"The lighthouse in Higashidori Village, Aomori Prefecture, is the tallest brick lighthouse in Japan, with a panoramic view of the Tsugaru Straits from the top of 128 steps. The surrounding pastureland is grazed by ""cold-riding horses,"" which are farm horses only found in this area, and provide a lovely sight for visitors."

This rare white-washed lighthouse is located along National Route 280. This 23-meter lighthouse has dutifully watched over boats navigating the Tairadate Straits since 1899. There are many sights to see here, including Matsumae Highway, which the Daimyo of Matsumae-han traveled before the Edo period, and Tairadate Daiba ruins, which kept foreign ships from invading. There is also a beach area, auto camping area, road stations, and plenty of popular places to enjoy nature.

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
