Aomori Hachinohe-shi Minatomachi (Minato Yamate Dori)
Every Sunday there is a morning market held just outside Mutsuminato Station on the JR Hachinohe Line. This is different to the usual Mutsuminato Station Morning Market, which is held every day apart from Sunday. Minatoyamate-dori Street becomes lined with approximately 50 sellers, offering fresh fish caught that morning, dried foods, processed foods and more. While you shop, you can dig into a wide variety of local delicacies on offer, from freshly fried tempura; to barley mochi; ganzuki (round steamed local sweet); and mameshidoki (biscuit made with crushed edamame beans mixed with sugar) to name a few. Japan's biggest morning market, the Tatehana Wharf Morning Market, is also held in the same area, so many people choose to visit both one after the other.

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
