  • Noboribetsu Jigokudani

    Hokkaido Noboribetsushi Noboribetsuonsenchou
This valley is all that remains of an ancient volcanic crater, and is lined with geysers and fumaroles. The hot springs sourced here run to Noboribetsu Onsen. The foaming, boiling scenery led to it being called Demon-dwelling Hell. It's also a perfect autumn leaf viewing spot, when the hillsides are painted red with autumn colors.
  • Tarumae Garo

    Hokkaido Tomakomaishi Tarumae
"A 60-minute drive from New Chitose Airport. When visiting this sightseeing destination, look for the sign on National Route 36. The area was designated a Natural Environment Preservation District by Tomakomai City in 1979. There is a parking lot in front of the Tarumae Garo Bridge; the gorge can be walked to from there. ""Garo"" means ""place where a river runs through cliffs"" in the Tohoku dialect, and as this name implies, the site consists of steep cliffs; the rocks of the cliffs and surrounding area are thickly covered with moss. Because of its unusual scenery, it is a great place to take some photos. Due to the risk of the bedrock near the river collapsing, visitors should not descend down to it."

    Hokkaido Noboribetsu-shi Noboribetsuonsencho
The red leaves of fall can be seen in Noboribetsu Onsen-cho at their most beautiful every year over the approximately one-month long period between late September to late October. There are observation decks located in the famous sightseeing spots of Jigokudani and Oyunuma, and one of the most attractive aspects is that visitors can enjoy the view shrouded in the rising steam. The trees have a beautiful gradation from the reds of the Japanese rowan and Japanese sumac to the oranges and yellows of the other trees. Another attractive aspect is that the fall leaves can be viewed from up close on the promenade.
  • Road valley of illusion and mystery of the will-o'-the-wisp

    Hokkaido Noboribetsushi Noboribetsuonsenchou
There is a promenade leading from Jigokudani Observatory to Tessen Pond. Footlights are place along the sides of the wooden walkway to illuminate it at night. This illuminated pathway, the only source of light in the pitch-dark mountains until Tessen Pond, is likened to a path of the will-o'-the-wisps. People love the magical scene created by the steam covering the landscape of this former exploded crater. Entry is free throughout the day and night. The walkway is lit up from sundown until 21:30.

    Hokkaido Noboribetsushi Noboribetsuonsenchou
This is one source of the famous Noboribetsu Onsen. There are nine type of spring qualities in Noboribetsu Onsen, and it is popular as one of the leading hot springs in Japan, ranked as Japan's best in a survey by a tourism magazine. You can also walk or drive around the source of the Noboribetsu Onsen as a sightseeing spot. Oku no Yu is the deepest of the sources you can walk to, and you can enjoy forest bathing if you do so. The adjacent Oyunuma and Oku no Yu were formed at the site of an explosive crater of the Hiyoriyama volcano. The surface temperature of Oku no Yu can be from about 75°C to 85°C, and the bubbling sulfur spring waters look like water in a hot kettle.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
