Ningle Terrace is a shopping area located in the forest adjacent to the New Furano Prince Hotel. Ningle appears in the book of the same name written by So Kuramoto and refers to the 15 centimeter-tall character known as The Wise Man of the Forest who lived in the forests of Hokkaido in the past. The line of small cottages in the forest with a collection of a variety of craft shops is like getting lost in a picture book. During the day, you can enjoy bathing in the forest while after sunset you can walk the romantic forest paths which are illuminated.

Ningle Terrace is an obligatory tourist stop in Furano and bus loads appear every evening when dusk falls. It is beautiful and insta-worthy, if thats your thing, and there are many slaves to the...

This michi-no-eki roadside station is on National Route 38 in Minami Furano Town, Sorachi County, Hokkaido. There's a massive fish pool with live Sakhalin taimen and white spotted char from the nearby Sorachi River, and the Butter Potatoes made with local Minami Furano potatoes are a hit. Canoes are also quite popular with locals, so the building itself was designed to resemble one.

The Museum displays a comprehensive range of Mr. Goto’s work, from the first of his paintings to be selected for inclusion in the Japanese Art Institute Exhibition and other early works through to his landscapes and sketches showing the flowers associated with different seasons of the year. The Museum shop sells books containing collections of paintings, exhibition catalogs, etc. The Museum restaurant, “Furano Grill,” is also highly recommended; while they eat, diners can enjoy spectacular views of the peaks of Mt. An observatory on a small hill offers a 360 degree view of a beautiful lavender garden which blooms from June to August, as well as the Tokachi Mountain Range. A variety of events are held here, including the Kamifurano Flower and Fire Festival in July. At the adjoining athletic ground and motor home camping ground, you can enjoy the great outdoors. There are also cottages available for use by families and groups.

Hokkaido Sorachi-gun Nakafurano Cho Nae Mubanchi
"This art museum has a collection centered around oil paintings of the Furano area in all four seasons. It was opened as a studio-gallery for the artist Shuichi Okuda, who has spent his 30-year career painting landscapes. ""It's hard to capture my motif through even a single pane of glass,"" he says, and true to his work he paints outside in the harsh northern landscape all year round, in -30 degree centigrade winters or 30+ degree summers. As a result, his paintings have a depth and reality that makes viewers feel as if they are truly in that space. It is housed in the remodeled former Nae Elementary School. The building itself has been modeled into a work of art on its own."

Hokkaido Furanoshi Nakagoryou New Furano Prince Hotel grounds (7 minutes on foot from hotel)
Soh’s BAR is located in Nakagoryo, Furano City, Hokkaido, a seven-minute walk away from the New Furano Prince Hotel. The creation of the screenwriter Sou Kuramoto, the bar is a building built in the middle of Karamatsu wood. Inside, the atmosphere has a relaxed, hideaway for grown-ups kind of feel about it and is a great place to kick back on the comfy sofas next to the warm fireplace. As well as original cocktails they also offer food such as their soft-bolied omurice (omelet made with fried rice).

Zero atmosphere and expensive. Definitely not worth the walk. Be aware the price list does not include consumption tax. The music was dreadful. On the bright side it is a beautiful building.

Hokkaido Sorachi-gun Kamifurano Cho Higashi 6-sen Kita 16
This is one of the largest lavender fields in Japan, and is managed by Farm Tomita. Farm Tomita is a true Hokkaido icon and has a variety of flower fields to see, including Irodori Field, which paints the hills in all the colors of the rainbow. The fields stretch out for four kilometers eastward from the farm center toward the Tokachi mountain range. This area was originally a paddy farm that changed to growing flowers for aroma essence. Most years, the lavender blooms from early through mid-July, and the combination of gentle flowers and stunning Tokachi mountain range is an incredible sight. The park grounds have observation decks, toilets, and a welcome house selling original goods and soft-serve ice cream.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
