It is also famous for its flowers where you can enjoy blossoms all year round with cherry blossoms, roses, tree peonies and hydrangeas. Join us in the spring for the popular Matsumae Sakura Festival and in August for the Matsumae Hydrangea Festival.

This is one of the few place in Japan which provide late cherry blossom. This place doesnt seem to be popular among travel agents. Hence, not many people come here, which makes this park even more...

A roadside station located in Shikabe Town with a geyser on its grounds. Discovered in 1924, the geyser blows every 12 minutes or so; the roadside station also has a footbath filled with waters from the hot spring that fuels the geyser. In the local specialty products shop, you can buy marine products like Shikabe cod roe, fresh seafood, and local vegetables. There's an adjoining facility offering hot spring-steamed and barbecued food. Women from the Shikabe Fishery Cooperative serve seafood dishes in the Hama no Kasan Shokudo restaurant and also hold short classes on how to make local meals.

We had the local cuisine experience at Hamano Kaasan, to learn cooking with fishermans wives and this place was just next to it. We had a good 10-15 minute foot bath ( I believe the admission fee...

The warship Kaiyou Maru struck a reef and sank off Esashi, Hokkaido in December 1868. 122 years later, in April 1990, a full-size replica of the frigate was completed. The replica ship now houses displays about the history of the late Tokugawa shogunate and about the different technologies used in the ship. Some of the approximately 33,000 artifacts salvaged from the wreck of the original ship are also on display; visitors can see how the artifacts are preserved, and can also experience a ship-sailing simulator. The museum is located approximately one hour and 50 minutes’ bus ride (Hakodate Bus company) from Hakodate Station.

Nice facsimile, looks good in the photos, but would sorely disappoint the marine historian. There are exhibits inside however we didnt go in as there were exhibits on display in he visitors centre...

Matsumae Castle is Japan's northernmost castle and was completed in 1854 after its predecessor structure, the Fukuyama Palace, was renovated and reinforced. The castle was created to provide defense in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate when many foreign ships began appearing in Japan's coastal waters. The castle's original wooden tower was destroyed in a fire in 1949. A reinforced concrete reconstruction, which looks identical to the original on the outside, was completed in 1961 and opened as the Matsumae Castle Museum. Inside, the museum displays archeological artefacts and numerous other items which tell the history of Matsumae Castle.
