This building was erected in 1912 to serve as the head office of Hokkaido Bank. The external appearance of the two story stone structure is almost unchanged from the day it was completed, giving visitors today a glimpse at the culture and architectural techniques prevalent at the time of its construction. The building was designed by Uheiji Nagano, who also worked on the design of The Former Otaru Branch of Bank of Japan, a Tangible Culural Property designated by Otaru City, standing on the opposite side of the street. Characteristic of bank architecture, the building has a design which exudes a solemnity which can be sensed coming from its tiniest constituent components, from the entrance, window design, and corners, down to even in the intervals between the windows. Today, Otaru Bine, a wine cafe and shop, operates in of the building.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
