Hachikyo is a local cuisine restaurant which uses carefully selected ingredients from all parts of Hokkaido and located only one minute walk from Susukino Station. The restaurant’s specialty is Tsukko Meshi, which is a bowl of rice covered with large amounts of salmon roe. As the staff pour the salmon roe over the rice they shout out “Oisah!”. The restaurant prides itself on being the only restaurant in the world which serves so much salmon roe. But it’s not just about the large amounts; they use only the best, most carefully selected salmon roe. The restaurant is decked out with ring buoys, fishing lamps, and fishing boat flags which give the characteristic feel of a banya, or simple lodging house used by fishermen.

Food: 8/10 Amazingly fresh fish caviar (ikura bowl) Service:7/10 Service is average. I felt like the place for more welcoming to Locals. Language might be a barrier. Our waiter can’t speak English...

In this stone warehouse which was built back in 1915 is Suginome, a restaurant where you can get crab and other Hokkaido dishes. It’s located just three minutes walk from Susukino Station. Their crab kaiseki course, in which you can fully appreciate the great taste of Hokkaido crab, is cooked and served using various methods to bring out the flavor of the crab, such as being steamed, roasted in its shell, grilled with miso, and cooked in a small pot. In other courses you can enjoy plenty of great tasting seasonal seafood and vegetables as well as horsehair crab. The restaurant is a great place to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
