    Hokkaido Furanoshi Higashirokugou
Goro’s Stone House is the house built by Goro Kuroita, the main character in the TV drama series “Kita no Kuni Kara” (“From the North Country”). In the TV series, Goro builds a house by clearing some of the many stones from Mt. Furano (formerly an active volcano) that were littering the fields. This is the house that Goro and his family were shown living in initially; the fireplace and stone bath have been preserved in the same condition as when the series was first being filmed in the 1980s.

Goros stone house is far from the city. You need to drive more the 40 minutes to reach there. It is not convenience to take public transport. Ideal transport is self drive. The attraction is at...

    Hokkaido Akanguntsuruimura Shimosetsuri
Tsurumidai is a bird-feeding station that every year, between November and March, is visited by large numbers of Japanese Red-crowned Cranes. The Cranes are fed twice a day, in the morning and around 2:30 p.m. Originally, the Cranes were fed by the teachers and students of the local elementary school. When the school closed down, Ms. Tome Watanabe, who lived nearby, decided that she would keep feeding the Cranes, and has continued to do so since then, which is another reason for Tsurumidai’s fame. Sometimes, nearly 200 Cranes can be seen.

Visited on a sunny but very cold day in late March and the snow has melted. There were perhaps 5-6 cranes. Feeding has stoppped here but I saw a field of cranes feeding themselves on fresh crops...

A roadside station located in Shikabe Town with a geyser on its grounds. Discovered in 1924, the geyser blows every 12 minutes or so; the roadside station also has a footbath filled with waters from the hot spring that fuels the geyser. In the local specialty products shop, you can buy marine products like Shikabe cod roe, fresh seafood, and local vegetables. There's an adjoining facility offering hot spring-steamed and barbecued food. Women from the Shikabe Fishery Cooperative serve seafood dishes in the Hama no Kasan Shokudo restaurant and also hold short classes on how to make local meals.

You can find out about the nature, history and culture of Shiretoko through the displays, commentary and films at the Rausu Visitor Center. In this center, you can see displays of killer whale skeletons, different panel displays and taxidermy. You can also see videos that introduce the scenery of Shiretoko and the local ecology. There is a playground for kids in this center which is great to visit with them.

This should be the standard by which all other visitor centres should be judged. Excellent in every way.

Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples is located in Suehiro Town, Hakodate and introduces the lives and culture of northern peoples. Collections with high academic value on a global level are on display. They include materials formerly held by Hakodate City Museum collected by philanthropists and the Hokkaido Development Commission between 1879 and 1886 in addition to Ainu folk materials collected by Dr. Osamu Baba, a world authority on research into northern peoples.

This was my favorite museum in Hakodate. Everything was in English as well as Japanese. Learned a lot about the native people and early settlers. Only 300 yen. One hour is probably enough time.

    Hokkaido Otarushi Sakaimachi 5-27
The exterior of the building is modeled on the Palazzo Grassi in Venice while the second, third and fifth floor exhibition rooms, styled on the 18th century palace rooms, house an elegant museum. The museum hosts many special exhibitions in addition to the Venetian displays of interior design throughout the seasons and permanent displays of Murano Glass. You can also get dressed up in aristocratic or carnival-style clothing and have your photograph taken for posterity! The museum is a 10-minute walk from JR Minami-Otaru Station and a ten minute drive from Otaru interchange.

This shop sells lots of different coloured glass items produced locally. They are beautiful and intricate. Reminded me of Murano glass.

There's a massive fish pool with live Sakhalin taimen and white spotted char from the nearby Sorachi River, and the Butter Potatoes made with local Minami Furano potatoes are a hit. Canoes are also quite popular with locals, so the building itself was designed to resemble one.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
