Hokkaido Sorachi-gun Nakafurano Cho Nae Mubanchi
"This art museum has a collection centered around oil paintings of the Furano area in all four seasons. It was opened as a studio-gallery for the artist Shuichi Okuda, who has spent his 30-year career painting landscapes. ""It's hard to capture my motif through even a single pane of glass,"" he says, and true to his work he paints outside in the harsh northern landscape all year round, in -30 degree centigrade winters or 30+ degree summers. As a result, his paintings have a depth and reality that makes viewers feel as if they are truly in that space. It is housed in the remodeled former Nae Elementary School. The building itself has been modeled into a work of art on its own."

Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
