  • Taitosaki Lighthouse

    A lighthouse located on Cape Taito on the southernmost tip of Kujukuri Beach. The reinforced concrete structure stands 15.9 meters tall and its light can be seen from 41 kilometers away. The lighthouse area is also known as a picturesque area with a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean's vast horizon, and on New Year's Day, many tourists make their way to take in the sight of the first sunrise of the new year. On weekends, a local NPO sells regional specialty products and holds the Lighthouse Festival here each year on May 4.
  • Cape Muroto Lighthouse

    This lighthouse is the symbol of Cape Muroto, which juts out into the deep-blue sea. The contrast between the chalk-white lighthouse and the vast ocean expanse is gorgeous, making it a popular spot for taking in the view. The lens has a diameter of 2.6 meters making it one of the largest in Japan. Every year on the Sundays before and after November 1st, a “Lighthouse Festival” is held and the interior is opened to the public.
  • Ioka Lighthouse

    A small lighthouse which stands on the grounds of Kaminagai Park on the Gyobu Cape, looking out from the cape over a panorama consisting of the surrounding Ioka Port, Kujukuri Beach, Byobugaura, and the Pacific Ocean. The sight of the lighthouse standing on the tip of the cape has been featured in numerous photographs, poems, and paintings. Note that visitors are not allowed to enter the interior of the lighthouse.
  • Nyudozaki Lighthouse

    This lighthouse is located on the side of Prefectural Route 121 in Konbuura, Kitauranyudozaki, Oga City. Notable for its black and white striped exterior, it is also known as being one of only 16 lighthouses in Japan that visitors can climb. It offers a sweeping view of the Oga Peninsula, the Sea of Japan, and Mizushima Island off the coast. There is also room with exhibits about the lighthouse and a monument to that shows the location of the 40th parallel north.
  • Cape Nosappu Lighthouse

    This, Hokkaido's oldest lighthouse, is on Japan's easternmost point. Crowds flock here to see Japan's earliest New Year sunrise. The white chalk structure has been chosen one of Japan's Top 50 Lighthouses, and on Marine Day, or November 1st Lighthouse Day, normal visitors can tour the inside.

    This white lighthouse stands on Hinomisaki in Hidaka-gun, Wakayama Prefecture. At 128 meters high, it is one of the tallest lighthouses in Wakayama Prefecture. The area around the lighthouse is known as a scenic spot for beautiful sunsets, and on clear days, Shikoku and Awaji Island can be seen. The lighthouse is open to the public on the third Sunday of every month from 2:00 p.m. for about three hours.

    "This lighthouse is located in Tamanoura, Tamanoura-cho, Goto City. Situated on the westernmost end of Kyushu facing the East China Sea, there is an observation deck where you can see the white lighthouse built on a cliff eroded by the rough waves. In addition, it is famous as the last spot in Kyushu to see the setting sun, and holds the ""Saigo no Yuhi Kanshokai"" (festival for the last sunset) every New Year's Eve."

    Standing atop the Kashino cliffs, this is Japan’s oldest lighthouse with a still working light. When ships from all over the world began visiting Japan after the country’s borders opened, this lighthouse was constructed according to a design by British engineer Richard Henry Brunton. The daffodils that bloom profusely on the premises are said to have been planted by the British engineers to remind them of their hometown.

    This limestone lighthouse was built on the edge of Kuzaki. The “oyashio” and “kuroshio” currents meet in the surrounding area, making for treacherous waters, so this lighthouse was built to protect fishing vessels. The interior is not accessible, but visitors can view the sea from the structure. Right nearby is a rocky stretch called “Yoroizaki,” from which it gets its name. Legend has it that the name “Yoroizaki” was chosen when Yamahito no Mikoto, seeking the place where Amaterasu was enshrined, visited Kuzaki and removed his yoroi (meaning armor) on the promontory.
  • Old Sakai Lighthouse

    This lighthouse is located in 5-Chome Ohama Kita-machi, Sakai Ward, Sakai City. Built in 1877, it is one of the oldest wooden Western-style lighthouses in Japan. Today, the lighthouse is no longer used to guide ships, but it has been maintained in excellent shape and continues to serve as a symbol of Sakai. It has also been designated a National Historic Site.

    "This 120-year-old lighthouse is made of unpainted Aji stone, extremely unusual for any lighthouse in Japan, and has been selected for inclusion in a list of Japan's Top 50 Lighthouses. The lighthouse was also famously used as allocation in the movie ""Times of Joy and Sorrow."" The adjoining Ogijima Lighthouse Museum contains exhibits on lighthouses around the country and the history of Ogijima."

    This lighthouse, one of the oldest in Japan, stands on Owajima Island 50 meters away from the southern cliffs of Cape Sata. The lighthouse has been selected for inclusion in a list of Japan's top 50 lighthouses. Designed by a British man, the lighthouse was destroyed in an air raid in 1945 during the Pacific War and was restored in 1950. Cape Sata faces the Pacific Ocean, the East China Sea, and Kinko Bay, and the emerald blue waters of the ocean create a beautiful contrast with the white walled lighthouse. On clear days, visitors standing on the tip of Cape Sata can see all the way to the islands of Tanegashima and Yakushima.
  • Sekizaki Lighthouse

    This lighthouse is located in Saganoseki, Oita City. Built in 1901, it is the oldest lighthouse in the prefecture. It offers sweeping views of the waters off the tip of the Saganoseki Peninsula, which are known for the high-quality mackerel and horse mackerel caught in them. The lighthouse is also adjacent to the Sekizaki Kaiseikan (Ocean and Astronomical Observatory Hall), which features an observation deck and an astronomical observatory that are open to the public.
  • Tairadate Lighthouse

    This rare white-washed lighthouse is located along National Route 280. This 23-meter lighthouse has dutifully watched over boats navigating the Tairadate Straits since 1899. There are many sights to see here, including Matsumae Highway, which the Daimyo of Matsumae-han traveled before the Edo period, and Tairadate Daiba ruins, which kept foreign ships from invading. There is also a beach area, auto camping area, road stations, and plenty of popular places to enjoy nature.
  • Old Fukura Lighthouse

    This lighthouse stands on a precipitous cliff called known as Hiyoriyama. The lighthouse’ origins are said to stretch back to 1608 when a man called Hino Sukenobu who lived in Fukura would light bonfires at night to guide ships operating on the dark sea. The current, extant lighthouse was built in 1876. A stone-paved path leads to the lighthouse, and an old-fashioned atmosphere still hangs in the air over the nearby fishing port. The square, five-meter-tall, three-story wooden lighthouse is Japan’s oldest extant wooden lighthouse. The lighthouse is specially illuminated at night in the summer and winter.
  • Cape Zanpa Lighthouse

    This lighthouse is located in a scenic area where cliffs of an elevated coral reef rise to heights of 30 to 40 meters and stretches for two kilometers. It is on Cape Zanpa that juts out into the East China Sea nearly in the center of Okinawa’s main island. It is also the place where the disastrous battle on Okinawa began, when the US military used the cape as a marker for their fierce assault on April 1, 1945.
  • Kadowakisaki Lighthouse

    The white Kadowakisaki lighthouse with observation deck is one of the sightseeing highlights of the popular Jogasaki Coast in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. With a total height of 24.9 meters, the first observation deck sits at 17 meters high and the second at four meters. As well as being a popular spot for photographs, on clear days it is also a fabulous scenic spot with views of the distant Izu Shichito Islands and the Amagi Mountains. The lighthouse is also situated right next door to the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge where you can experience the thrill of precipitous cliffs.
  • Mugisaki Lighthouse

    With its white-walled exterior, Mugisaki Lighthouse watches over the boats navigating the Fuseda waterway, and is well known as a place where one can hear the sound of the ama (female diver) sea whistles during the dive season, having been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Scenic Sound Spots. Located on the very southern tip of Shima Town, Shima City, to the east is Nakiri Lighthouse, while to the west one can see Fuseda Kojima Island and Wagu Oshima Island.
