This beautiful scenery was created from the lava that flowed out and spread when Mt. Asama had its giant eruption in 1783. The sight of the giant lava boulders scattered around makes for an impressive sight. In spring the lovely alpine plants bloom in profusion, while visitors can enjoy the changing leaves in the fall. The contrast with the deep black earth is indeed a sight to behold.

どこを見ても溶岩に囲われていて、自然の凄さや強さを感じることができる場所でした。 景色も良く30分ほど歩きました。 一度は訪れるべき、おすすめの場所です。 I drove there at late February. There is nice view and I felt the power of nature. I walked for about 30 minutes there...

The Toki Forest Park is situated next to the Sado Toki Conservation Center in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. There are a number of different facilities dotted about the place relating to the crested ibis, or “toki”, designated a National Natural Monument. The Toki Rapport Plaza, complete with large breeding cages, enables visitors to see the toki up close. The Toki Materials Exhibition Hall highlights the conservation work surrounding toki through the use of panels, audio-visual materials and specimens, and the Observation Gallery enables visitors to observe the crested ibises in the Sado Toki Conservation Center through the windows.

The toki (crested ibis) are making a comeback on Sado thanks to this preservation and breeding program. These endangered creatures are a rare sight, so being able to see some of the breeding pairs up...

Tsurumidai is a bird-feeding station that every year, between November and March, is visited by large numbers of Japanese Red-crowned Cranes. The Cranes are fed twice a day, in the morning and around 2:30 p.m. Originally, the Cranes were fed by the teachers and students of the local elementary school. When the school closed down, Ms. Tome Watanabe, who lived nearby, decided that she would keep feeding the Cranes, and has continued to do so since then, which is another reason for Tsurumidai’s fame. Sometimes, nearly 200 Cranes can be seen.

Visited on a sunny but very cold day in late March and the snow has melted. There were perhaps 5-6 cranes. Feeding has stoppped here but I saw a field of cranes feeding themselves on fresh crops...

This virgin forest located about a 30-minute drive from Amami City is the most untouched subtropical broad-leaved tree forests left on Amami Oshima Island. The forest, which extends deep into the mountains of Naze, evokes images of ancient times. The forest's massive 10 meter-tall Cyathea lepifera ferns are living fossils whose fronds are believed to have been fodder for dinosaurs eons ago. The sunlight filtered through their large umbrella-like fronds creates a mystical spectacle to behold. The forest is also a habitat for rare wildlife such as Lidth's jay, a national Natural Monument, as well as the Okinawan tree lizard.

This sheer 250-meter cliff is part of the Kuniga Coast in the national park on Nishinoshima Island, part of the Oki Islands. The whole area, including the Matengai Cliff, has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. The precipitous faces of these rough basalt coastal cliffs worn down by the movement of the sea look as though they were cut with a knife. The area has been chosen as one of Japan's top 100 sunset viewing spots. About two kilometers of boardwalk connect the Matengai Cliff and Kuniga Beach. It's not so far, but as there is also a 250-meter difference in elevation, getting there and back takes from 60 to 90 minutes.

Definitely need a car to access this incredible spot, or hiking for a day. But the surreal view is worth it, with the shining sea and gust of air. I felt out of Japan, out of Earth!

This is a wooden pathway that starts from the Onnenai Visitor Center at the western end of the Kushiro Wetlands. There is a two-kilometer barrier-free wooden boardwalk that allows you to stroll through the Kushiro Wetlands, observing the flora and fauna of the changing seasons. Also leading to the promenade of Kushiro Marsh Observatory, it is a very popular place to enjoy a gentle stroll. It takes approximately one hour to go around once. Depending on the season, you can enjoy seeing flowers such as bogbean, cotton grass and bog rosemary as you go around wetlands of reed, sedges and peat moss. In addition, you can see wild birds, and Heike fireflies from July to August.

Located along the Iruma River, this spot is about a 15-minute walk west of Hanno Station along Prefectural Route 70. The riverside has lots of green space where children can run free in the midst of nature. The river is shallow enough for even preschoolers to play in, and a wooden deck and a boardwalk along it makes it great for a stroll. Lots of visitors come to view the blossoms when the riverbed's cherry trees flower in spring. There's also a shopping area nearby where you can rent equipment to have a barbecue.

"An area of terraced rice fields sprawling at the foot of mountains in the Tonoshiro area in Ueda City. The fields were cultivated between the Genroku and Meiji periods (1688-1912). After being selected as one of the 100 most beautiful rice terrace areas in Japan, conservation activities were initiated to preserve the fields. School extracurricular activity programs are conducted in the area as well as programs such as the ""Terrace Rice Owner System"" and ""Sake Rice Owner System"" which allow regular people to experience the entire rice production process from planting to harvesting and receive a bag of rice they made, or a bottle of sake created from the rice they harvested."

Bise Fukugi Tree Road is a tunnel of garcinia subelliptica trees surrounding a village which is divided like a grid. The trees were planted as a wind shield for the houses and have grown. The estimated age of the oldest tree is said to be 300 years old and the bright green color is dazzling. A ride on a water buffalo cart is also recommended.
  • Hotokegaura
    Travel / Tourism
Sai village in Shimokita-gun, Aomori Prefecture
Hotokegaura is a series of impressive giant and oddly shaped rock formations extending about two kilometers along the coast. The crashing waves continually erode the rock face, and the resulting effects are mysterious and an amazing sight, especially given the contrast between the broad, blue sea and the gray rocks. It is believed that these rocks were created by undersea volcanic activity about 20 million years ago. While the rocks are visible from land, it is also possible to take an excursion boat to see them from the sea.

    Travel / Tourism
    Nigata Pref. Tokamachishi Touge
At Hoshitoge, around 200 tanada (terraced rice fields) of different sizes dot the slopes; the appearance of the landscape changes with the seasons and with the time of day. During the period when the “Sea of Clouds” effect and the “Mizukagami” phenomenon (whereby the surface of the flooded rice fields shines like a mirror) are most common, the Hoshitoge area receives large numbers of tourists from throughout Japan. However, the fields are located on working farms, so visitors are asked to be respectful and considerate. The Hoshitoge terraced rice fields are located around 20-minute walk from Matsudai Station on the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line.

This black pine tree is one of the Kenrokuen garden’s famous sights. Its name literally means “rising root pine,” and the 15-meter tall tree combined with its 40 roots of varying sizes rising as much as two meters off the ground is a stunning sight to behold. According to records, Maeda Nariyasu, the 13th lord of Kaga Domain, originally piled up a mound of earth and planted the tree on top of it; as such, its roots were originally covered by soil, but as it grew the roots became exposed. Also serving as the derivation of the former town of Neagari, in 1978 it was designated the town’s first Cultural Property. Today, a cedar bark-lined path passes by the tree, and many visitors strolling the garden take a moment to stop and admire the view.

This riverbed is about a 10-minute walk up along the Iwato River from Amanoiwato-jinja Shrine. It is said that when Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun Goddess, shut herself inside this cave behind a rock door, eight million gods gathered here and held a ceremony. If you stack rocks and make a wish, it will supposedly come true—which is why countless piles of rocks can be seen in the area, creating a mysterious sight indeed.
