  • Mt. Fuji

    This is an elegant mountain which is certainly also a symbol of Japan, which is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 meters. Mt. Fuji is also often the theme of artistic inspiration such as Hokusai Katsushika: “Fugaku Sanjurokkei” (Thirty-six Sceneries of Mt. Fuji). Also, Mt. Fuji is also the place where the “Mt. Fuji faith” started and it is revered as a sacred mountain in which a deity resides. In 2013 it was registered with World Cultural Heritage as “Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration”. There are four climbing routes including the Yoshida Route, the Subashiri Route, the Gotemba Route and the Fujinomiya Route. Since the opening periods vary depending on which mountain trail you choose, it is necessary to confirm in advance whether your intended route is open.

    Kamikochi is an approximately 1,500 meter high gorge in the Chubu Sangaku National Park. Known as one of the top mountain scenic spots in the country it is designated as a special place of scenic beauty and natural monument. It is a gateway to the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) and many tourists, mainly climbers and photographers visit each year. To help protect the environment the use of cars is restricted so it is recommended to use a shuttle bus service or taxi.

    This is popular as a mountain that can be reached from the city in just one hour. Having received three stars as a sightseeing location from the Michelin Guide, it is visited by approximately 3 million people each year who come primarily for viewing colorful fall foliage or to hike in the warmer months. It’s an easy mountain to access for both children and inexperienced visitors with a cable car in addition to the various well-maintained hiking paths. It’s famous for tororo soba and shops also sell souvenirs associated with tengu (a long-nosed goblin in Japanese folklore). There is also a monkey park, wildflower garden, and observatory, and in the summer season the beer garden near the summit is popular. An onsen (hot springs) lies just in front of Takaosanguchi Station.

    A 936 meter high mountain located on the highest peak of the outer rim of the north crater of Mt. Aso. In ancient times, it was called Tomigahana (the nose looking into the distance), but the great author Tokutomi Soho dubbed it Daikanbo (great overviewing mountain) after being moved by the magnificent view. The mountain offers a sweeping view of the five peaks of Mt. Aso, the Kuju Mountain Range, and the Aso Caldera. The controlled burns conducted in spring are held on an impressive scale.

    A mountain-climbing entrance at Awakura, Fujinomiya City. It is accessible from the Mt. Fuji Skyline (Prefectural Route 152). It is the starting point for the Fujinomiya Route from the southern face of Mt. Fuji to the peak. It features a steep slope and is located at a high elevation of 2,400 meters, making the distance to the peak is shorter, so many climbers choose this route.

    Mt. Yoshino is one of Japan’s most beautiful areas for seeing cherry blossoms and it is said even the great Toyotomi Hideyoshi came here to view the cherries. The cherries, which number some 30 thousand in total, are divided into areas – the Shimosenbon (Lower 1,000 Trees), Nakasenbon (Middle 1,000 Trees), Kamisenbon (Upper 1,000 Trees), and Okusenbon (Inner 1,000 Trees). The trees gradually come into blossom starting with the Shimosenbon, eventually coloring the entire mountain with their flowers. The sight, praised since ancient times in countless waka poems, continues to captivate the hearts of throngs of people today. The mountain was designated a national Site of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site in 1924. In 2004, the sacred land extending from Mt. Yoshino and Mt. Koya to Kumano as well as the intervening pilgrimage routes were registered collectively as the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range World Heritage Site.
  • Mt. Moiwa

    This 531 meters tall mountain is in Sapporo's Minami Ward. Located roughly in the heart of the city, you can get to the middle using the cable car or Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Highway by car, and from there take the Morisu Mini Cable Car to the top. There are also hiking paths to the top. From the peak, you can look out over Sapporo and Ishikari Bay on the Sea of Japan, making it a popular night time viewing spot.

    An 877 meter tall mountain located in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture which has two peaks—Nantai-san and Nyotai-san (“men's body” and “female body,” respectively). Due to the color the mountain takes on in the morning and at dusk, it is also known as “Violet Peak,” and has been popularly worshipped as a sacred mountain since ancient times. Over 1,000 varieties of plants grow on the mountain, and visitors can enjoy the sight of various plant lives here throughout the year. A cable car and ropeway provide convenient access to the top of the mountain, making it easy even for children and senior citizens to enjoy the beautiful view. On Saturday, Sunday, and holiday evenings from October to the end of February (excluding during bad weather, the New Year's holidays, and safety inspections), visitors can ride the ropeway as part of a special “Stardust Cruising” event and take in the beautiful nightscape of the surrounding area.

    A mountain famous for its night view and which has also been selected as one of Japan's night view heritages. The “10 million dollar nightscape” visitors can enjoy from the observatory at the top of the mountain in the evening is a must-see. The observatory is also artfully lit up at night, further enhancing the magical atmosphere. There are many facilities in the vicinity of the mountain for everyone from children to adults to enjoy, including a botanical garden, athletic park, and golf course; the Rokko Shidare Observatory in Rokko Garden Terrace in particular has become a new famous spot in the area.

    This is a mountain in Shimoda City. The mountain got its name from the ridge line at the crest which looks like the outline of a woman sleeping on her back. An aerial tramway near the IzukyuShimoda Station connects passengers to the peak of the mountain from which a panoramic view of downtown Izu, Mt. Amagi, and the seven islands of Izucan been seen.

  • Mt. Omuro

    This is a mountain of 580 meters above sea level in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. There is a crater on the summit with a diameter of about 300 meters, and you can also enjoy walking around the circumference of the crater. The purpose of “Yamayaki” (burning the dead grass off a mountain) which has been done for more than 700 years was in order to obtain Japanese nutmeg which was formerly used as animal feed for livestock. Nowadays, it is done on the second Sunday in February every year, and many people visit for sightseeing. The mountain was designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 2010.

    A 1,449 meter tall mountain located in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture and one of the Three Mountains of Jomo. At the top of the mountain are Lake Haruna, a caldera lake, and the Haruna-Fuji lava dome central volcanic cone. A ropeway takes visitors to the top in around three minutes, and from here you can get a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain and the mountains of the Joshu area. Many events are also held here and in winter visitors can enjoy the magical site of the Lake Haruna during the Illumination Festa nighttime illumination festival.

    A mountain in the Northwestern part of the Nara Basin that straddles Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture and Taish Towni, Minamikawachi County, Osaka. Mt. Nijo has two peaks, Odake standing at 515 meters, and Medake standing at 474 meters. At the peak of Odake is the grave of Prince Otsu, the son of Emperor Tenmu who was killed on allegations of rebellion.

    A mountain famous for its view of the lights of Hakodate at night. There are many ways to get to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view, including a ropeway, bus, and by car (note that the mountain is closed to cars from mid-November to early April); from the top, you can getting a sweeping view of the city below—in addition to the nightscape, visitors are also recommended to take in the daytime view as well as sunset. There's a restaurant at the top from which diners can take in a meal and the view, as well as a shop selling popular Hokkaido sweets and original merchandise.

    A 702 meter tall mountain located in the center of the Rokko mountains in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The Mt. Maya Kikuseidai observatory near the top of the mountain offers a panoramic view stretching from Kobe to the Kii Peninsula, and the view from here at night is called the “10 million dollar nightscape.” A cable car and ropeway can be taken from the observatory to the top of the mountain, and access from the city is convenient. The Maya View Terrace 702 facility at Maya Ropeway Hoshinoeki Station has a café and outdoor terrace where you can enjoy Japanese-style grill-your-own barbecue.

    This 929-meter mountain receives many visitors who come to see the fall foliage or the sunrise on January 1st. The mountain is easy to access with a cablecar and lift available. Along the path from the cablecar’s Mitakesan Station to the Musashi Mitake-jinja Shrine are several shukubo (lodging for pilgrims) which are available to the general public for accommodation. Sights to see include the natural ancient Japanese zelkova, which is one of Natural Monument, while the observation area and Nanayonotaki Waterfall are also popular. Many visitors take their dogs with them since the Musashi Mitake-jinja Shrine conducts prayers for pet dogs.

    This is a mountain with an elevation of 342 meters located at the eastern tip of Nara Park. The entire mountain is covered in grass and since it has three small hills that look like conical hats, it is also called Mt. Mikasa (three-hat mountain). Visitors can see deer scattered around the mountain and the mountain makes for a beautiful sight in all four seasons including cherry trees in the spring and changing leaves in the autumn. Every year on the fourth Saturday in January the mountain is set on fire, and a launch of fireworks is used as a sign that the entire mountain is ablaze. This is one of Nara’s large events when there is syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism between Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Todaiji Temple, and Kofukuji Temple so as to pray for the peace and comfort of ancestors, Nara’s disaster prevention, and world peace as well as to announce the coming of spring.

    Located practically in the center of Gunma Prefecture, this polygenetic volcano is considered one of the most beautiful in the Kano region as well as one of the 100 most beautiful mountains in Japan. From May to July, a diverse variety of azalea species come into bloom, dying the mountain lovely colors. A variety of other activities can be enjoyed on the mountain throughout the year—in addition to mountain climbing, there's camping, hill climbing, trail running, wildlife observation and activity programs, and in winter, there's snowshoeing and pond smelt fishing on frozen Lake Onuma.

    This 584-meter high mountain is located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. Known as a sacred mountain, it flourished as the site of Japanese mountain asceticism practiced by esoteric Buddhism. The area around the mountain has a lot of indigenous vegetation, and bustles in the spring and autumn with people coming to see cherry blossoms and the changing leaves. Currently, it is even gaining popularity as a power spot.

    Named after the artist Daikan Yokoyama, who loved to paint Mt. Fuji, this area is can be accessed through the Anest Iwata Turnpike Hakone. Located in the southwesterly area of the mountains surrounding Hakone, it is known as an ideal spot for viewing Mt. Fuji. A view of Izuoshima and Lake Ashinoko can also be enjoyed. Selected as one of the top 50 views in Kanagawa, it is also popular for those who enjoy auto touring.
