    A large-scale Chinese restaurant located near Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo. The restaurant was opened in 1961 as a palace dedicated to serving the best Chinese cuisine in the world. Totaling nine floors, the restaurant was remodeled in 2015. In addition to serving Chinese food, the building also hosts a Japanese restaurant, banquet halls, cafe, and wedding chapel. The restaurant's exquisite food, deemed Toh-Ten-Koh cuisine, consists of unique takes on Cantonese and Fujian dishes, styles particularly favored in Japan. Toh-Ten-Koh's stunningly huge menu of authentic Chinese cuisine includes lunch and dinner courses as well as a la carte options. Tokyo Skytree is visible from the restaurant towering beyond Shinobazu Pond, and the cityscape at night as seen from here is beautiful.

    Opened by the Emperor’s chef Shiro Miyagawa in 1926, this Toriten chicken shop emerged in the early days of the Showa period as a place for chicken kamaboko tempura. Nowadays it is famous for its food loved dearly by those of Oita Prefecture. One can enjoy various tastes by adding Oita Prefecture kabosu or vinegar soy sauce and mustard. The standard menu’s “Honke Toriten Teishoku” is satisfyingly voluminous. From Beppu Station take the Kamenoi bus towards APU, alight at Funakouji, and walk five minutes.

    Shatenki Nigouten is a specialty Chinese porridge restaurant founded in 1951, and famous for a Chinese porridge in which raw rice as well as dried oysters, dried scallops and a whole chicken are stewed for four hours. It is five minutes’ walk from Exit 2 at Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Tokyu Minatomirai Line.

    So authentic and yummy but reasonable. You need to go early in the morning, otherwise you end up waiting outside for a rather long time.

The Honkan location is currently under renovation and plans to reopen in fall of 2018. (Reopened October 10). Its shop that is two buildings down from the Honkan is open.     This is a buta-manju (steamed pork bun) specialist shop established in 1915 in Kobe’s Nankinmachi Chinatown. It is known as the originator of the “buta-manju” and “buta-man,” created when the founders brought the Chinese “tenshin-pozu” to Japan and adapted for Japanese tastes. Fluffy dough overflowing with meat juices, the bun is a Nankinmachi Chinatown favorite with consistent queues to get one. Aside from takeout, there is also an eat-in space available. The nearest station is Motomachi Station.

    Soft, flaky pastry around a very salty pork. I wish I could eat these every meal. Or at least every football game drinking beer.
