Moritaya is an old sukiyaki restaurant established in 1869 in the Meiji period before Japan’s Westernization movement was fully underway. It is distinctive for its beef which comes in from a directly-managed ranch in Tanba, Kyoto Prefecture. Since it handles everything from production to sales, it can take responsibility and provide safe meat for its customers. The meat is so high in quality that it was selected as one of the offerings for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Taisho. The restaurant is in the “Eat Paradise” on the 11th floor of the Isetan Kyoto store in the JR Kyoto Station building, and from the window one can see Kyoto Tower as well as Kyoto’s Five Zen temples.

Bad experience, staffs attitude shows they are not welcoming customers or maybe I’m tourist? I never met any Japanese rude like this. At first, the reception don’t allow us to get the ticket for...

    Mie Matsusaka-shi Nakamachi 1878
This meat cuisine restaurant, standing on Prefectural Route 60, is located in Naka-machi, Matsusaka City. The longstanding establishment opened in the Meiji period and serves sukiyaki, steaks, and amiyaki grilled foods using Matsusaka beef raised on company-owned farms. The restaurant's sukiyaki, sauteed on an iron skillet over a charcoal fire, has been a signature dish since it first opened its doors, and those who order it can savor the delicious flavor and aroma of Matsusaka beef laced with smooth, high quality fat.

Booked on their web site and got a confirmation within 1 hour. It is convenient for foreigners. Their staff speak little English. Yet the quality of steaks does the talking. Sukiyaki is also...

Located only two minutes by foot from Keihan Main Line’s Sanjo Station along the Kamogawa River, this is a long-standing ryotei (Japanese restaurant) which was established in 1869. This branch is set deep in a backstreet alley with a long cobblestone approach that is typical of Kyoto and has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the small rooms facing the Kamogawa River, guests can enjoy platform seats overlooking the Kamogawa River in summer. On the menu are sukiyaki, shabu-shabu and oil-yaki (slices of meat fried in oil) which use carefully selected Kyoto meat. In particular, the sweet Kansai-style sukiyaki which they will cook one slice at a time is quite popular, and has earned them many repeat customers.

This veteran restaurant on the Iga Highway in Ueno-nonin-machi, Iga City, Mie Prefecture specializes in meat dishes. They offer the finest grade of carefully inspected Iga beef from a superlative pedigree of Iga cattle. They use only the best sukiyaki meat for their local favorite Kotobuki-yaki, thin slices of beef cooked with vegetables at the table in a cast-iron pan. They don't use any seasoning to let the savory goodness of their superb ingredients shine through. Another amazing dish is the local favorite Butter Yaki, tender loin topped with butter and grated daikon radish and served with condiments.

This restaurant specializing in Hida beef, the most historic location of this nationwide chain, offers Saitobi beef, which is superior even to A5-grade beef. We recommend their course meals, as well as their lunches, which let you choose from one of three Hida beef main dishes: classic chargrilled barbeque, ultimate shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot), and traditional sukiyaki. Whether it’s their fresh homemade tofu, their Okuminokojidori chicken, which gets more savory with every bite, or their locally-grown vegetables, the restaurant pays great attention to all of their ingredients, not just their beef. You’re sure to enjoy the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere, created in part by the torch near the entrance.

This ryotei Japanese restaurant in Toba City, Mie Prefecture specializes in Matsusaka beef and select Japanese black beef. All the rooms have tatami mat floor seating in a settled Japanese ambiance. You can gaze at their beautiful garden from the veranda. The owner is a Matsusaka beef enthusiast and buys the restaurant's meat directly from the source, where Matsusaka cattle are carefully raised. As a result, the menu is full of delectable Matsusaka beef, including dishes like delicious sukiyaki (thin slices of beef cooked with vegetables at the table in a cast-iron pan), shabu-shabu (thinly sliced meat boiled with vegetables and dipped in sauce), grilled beef, and steak. Whatever you order, a server prepares it right before your eyes.

Isshobin Main Restaurant Hanare serves Shabu Shabu (stew cooked at the table) and Sukiyaki made with grade A4 andA5 Matsusaka beef at reasonable prices. It is located in front of the main restaurant in the city of Matsusaka along the Kumano Highway, which passes through city. Guests cook their meals in individual pots, so the restaurant can easily handle everyone from solo diners to large groups. Instead of buying the meat cut by cut, the restaurant has unique channels for buying entire animals, which allows it to keep prices affordable. It also uses a secret recipe handed down through the generations to create its miso dipping sauce, which plays a large part in bringing out the flavor of the meat to the greatest possible extent.

This longstanding sukiyaki restaurant is said to have been the originator of Kumamoto's meat culture and was established in 1881. Enwrapped in the restaurant's black decor and soothing atmosphere, customers can enjoy the flavors of a veteran establishment known for its meat. The shop's waitresses prepare it right in front of your eyes from start to finish, and through the resulting sounds and aromas, you'll be able to fully savor the flavor of a dish dating to the period of intense Westernization which occurred during Japan's Meiji period.
