Located along Kawara-machi Street, this Japanese confectioner was founded in 1899. Their famous “nadai mamemochi” features red bean jam and red peas wrapped in freshly-made mochi. It has been around since the founding, and is a standard Kyoto souvenir, popular enough to see people lining up to get some.

This is a Japanese confectionary store in the Yume-Kaze Plaza in front of the gate of the Todai-ji Temple in Kasugano Town, Nara City. The store makes sweets from locally grown ingredients such as Japanese Yamato-imo yam and Yoshino-kuzu arrowroot. A popular item is the Japanese hotcake sweet bean paste sandwich called Yamato sanzan dorayaki. They are made freshly daily with red beans, and flour and eggs from a Tokachi farm. This is a yomogi mochi rice cake specialty shop located on Sanjo-dori Street in Hashimoto Town, Nara City. The yomogi mochi is made from carefully selected locally grown produce. Hot rice is pounded swiftly according to traditional methods to make the soft and springy texture of the sweet. The shop is visited by many customers who come to see the skilled combination of the craftsmen turning and pounding the rice first hand.

The nicest, freshest mochi I’ve had in Japan (and I’ve tried a lot!) I also got to see them making the mochi which was really interesting.

"A Japanese confectionary shop located close to the Ueno 3 Chome intersection on Chuo-dori Avenue a four-minute walk from Okachimachi Station. The shop's name, literally ""Rabbit Shop,"" is derived from the fact the original owner was born in the year of the hare. This long-standing establishment continues to follow the same policy of ""superb flavor, low prices, and container recycling"" implemented when it first opened its doors in 1913. The shop's signature products are its dorayaki pancake sandwiches filled with sweet Tokachi azuki beans; and its kisaku monaka half-moon-shaped wafer cakes filled with smooth sweet bean paste. The shop's dorayaki have a crisp outer dough made with lotus flower honey and are counted as one of the three best dorayaki in Tokyo. As they are packed while still hot off the griddle, customers are urged to eat them as soon as possible."

They make great dorayaki. This is worth the drive. Awesome stuff. You often see people eating it outside of the shop. Not able to wait until get home. If you’re around get one and try it out.

This is a well-established wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop founded in 1884, and Ginza's Kuya monaka is loved by many including those that are cultured and their signature product of monaka is popular as a present for a special someone. Without using any additives they combine carefully selected red beans and sugar into a tsubushi-an that has a refined sweetness. Since the shop sells out of the entirely homemade treats, customers will need to make a reservation if they want to be certain of their purchase. Ginza Station is the closest train station.

    Osaka Sakaishi Sakai-ku Shinzaikechouhigashi 1-2-1
This long-established Japanese-style confectionary store, located in Sakai, was founded in 1329, in the late Kamakura period. Their specialty walnut mochi's name is derived from green soybean paste wrapped in mochi. The exquisite balance of the product's softness and the bean paste's smoothness is something people never tire of, according to its reputation. Their take-out menu is so popular that there is always a line extending out of the store. Additionally, seated within the eat-in space inside the store, customers can also enjoy shaved-ice walnut mochi, as well as the store's regular walnut mochi.

The dessert here are ok... not as refined as in Kyoto. Service is lacking. Can skip if you have no time to wait in the queue.

This dumpling shop founded in 1878 is known for its tasty kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour), each of which is carefully made the old fashioned way and served on a bamboo skewer. Guests can enjoy their dumplings inside the shop's bright Japanese-style interior. Although the shop officially closes at 5:00 p.m., we recommend going earlier in the day as it sometimes sells out and closes early.

Established in the late Edo period, Kototoi Dango continues to serve the same sweet dango dumplings as when it first opened its doors. Unlike most dango, Kototoi Dango's dango are not covered in a sweet sauce, nor are they served on bamboo skewers. Kototoi Dango's dango come in three flavors-adzuki bean, white bean jam, and miso and white bean jam. You can also order monaka wafer cakes in the shape of a black-headed gull filled with the same three flavors with an advance reservation. The shop closes when stock for the day runs out, so be sure to come early.
