The gardens of Giverny in France so loved by the impressionist painter Claude Monet have been replicated in Kitagawa Village, Aki County, Kochi Prefecture. Here in the vast gardens are some 100,000 plants. Different scenes can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons where visitors can delight in the Flower Garden with flowers blooming throughout the year, the Water Garden which features in replica form Monet’s memorable series of works, the Water Lilies, as well as the Light Garden which is based on Monet’s expedition to the Mediterranean Sea. From about June each year the lush blue water lilies, which were said never to have bloomed for Monet until the end, are an exceptional sight. There is also an observatory, a restaurant, and shop.

So very pretty. This is not a copy of the garden at Giverny, but rather a garden that recreates the feel and scenes of Monets paintings. I was fortunate enough to visit in August, when the...

This is a garden with a large central pond and a circular walking trail located northeast of Hikone Castle. It was said to have been built by Ii Naooki, the fourth feudal lord of Hikone domain. This is a famous garden built with every luxury imaginable from the Edo culture—it is designed after a palace garden from the Chinese Emperor Xuanzong of Tang. Buildings such as Rinchikaku, artificial hills of Houshoudai are built as if they project out into the large lake, and trees, shrubs and rocks are cleverly arranged to imitate “Omi Hakkei” (Eight Views of Omi). The illumination is also well worth seeing, which is held in November during the season for autumnal leaves.

Originally, I was going to pass on the gardens but it came included with the castle so I decided to come. I am glad I visited the garden because it was beautiful and there were amazing views of the...

The indoor botanical garden at Tsurumi-Ryokuchi boasts Japan's largest greenhouse by surface area. It was opened in 1990 as the Osaka Pavilion for The International Garden and Greenery Exposition. Built with steel frames and glass walls, standing two stories tall, its design was made to evoke the imagery of the water lilies floating in the wetlands surrounding it. Within the building there are a variety of halls dedicated to the various climates and vegetation found on Earth, from the tropics to the polar regions. Seasonal flowers are included and there are usually in excess of 300 different varieties for you to enjoy.

Some 10 thousand rose plants spanning around 250 varieties from countries around the world grow in the garden. The garden is divided into a local rose garden planted with varieties like the Madam Violet and Amatsu Otome, a cultivar created in Itami City and named after a popular opera star of the time; and the ""Hasselt"" garden named after Itami's sister city in Belgium. The best time to see the garden's roses is from mid-May to mid-June and from mid-October to mid-November."
